The main setting of Just Ella is in a castle in medieval times. There is a few types of settings in this book:
ALIEN: Ella is very out of place in the castle she is forced to live in. She doesn't like or understand all the rules and regulations, whereas everyone else in the castle seems to be fine with all the uptightness. She also feels out of place in her house with the Step-Evils (her stepmother and stepsisters), because Ella is scrawny but tough, non-greedy, very beautiful, and in lots of other ways, completely different from her fatso steps.
MIRROR: The palace mirrors the uptight ways of Madame Bisset and many of the ladies-in-waiting. The entire castle is shocked when Ella or someone else makes the slightest mistake in etiquitte.
MOLD: The castle sort of molds Ella linto a more sophisticated, brave, reformed young woman. She still keeps her original personality (fiesty, tough, not afraid to get her hands dirty), but life in the castle helps her to learn how to be more princess-like, whether Ella likes it or not.
ESCAPE: If there is an escape setting or not in this book is kind of unclear. Ella escapes into her own mind at lots of points in the story; remembering her father and all of his books, what life would be like to be married to Jed, and in the beginning, what life would be like married to the prince.
